Organisations and communities are not separate things. When we treat them as if they are, we build systems that serve neither. My work is about closing that gap — one honest conversation at a time.

The Story

Where it all began

Becky's career began in the United Kingdom in the late 1990s, working directly alongside communities that had been systematically excluded from the decisions shaping their lives. She learned early that genuine participation isn't a process — it's a commitment. And most organisations weren't making it.

In 2005 she brought that conviction to Australia, where she quickly established herself as one of the sector's most respected voices on community engagement. She worked with local governments, infrastructure bodies, not-for-profits and corporate organisations — always asking the same question: Are you actually listening, or are you going through the motions?

Becky Hirst On the ground. In the room. Always listening.

Over the years, Becky's work expanded from frontline practice into strategy, leadership, training, publishing, and advocacy. She became not just a practitioner but an architect of the field — shaping how the sector thinks about engagement at the deepest level.

Today she operates across consulting, speaking, education and community building — bringing the same energy she had in 1997 and the wisdom of 27 years of seeing what works, what fails, and why.

What Drives the Work

The principles Becky works by

01

Honesty over comfort

Real engagement requires the courage to say what's true, even when it's inconvenient. Becky doesn't design processes to produce a predetermined answer.

02

Community as the expert

The people closest to an issue understand it best. Becky's role is to create the conditions where that expertise can actually be heard and acted upon.

03

Systemic thinking

Individual conversations matter, but lasting change requires shifting the structures, incentives and cultures that shape how organisations relate to their communities.

04

Warmth as strategy

Being human isn't soft. It's the most effective leadership quality there is. Warmth, curiosity and genuine care produce better outcomes than any framework alone.

05

Practice over theory

Everything Becky teaches and advocates for comes from direct experience. She has been in the room, held the difficult conversations, and navigated the messy reality of actual engagement.

06

Long-term over transactional

Genuine community relationships aren't built in a single consultation. Becky works with organisations to build the capacity for sustained, meaningful engagement over time.
